Advice in Buying Traditional Archery Supplies

By Alice On June 27, 2010No Comments

What is it about traditional archery supplies that people can’t get over? Maybe it’s the fact that we somehow want to be connected with the medieval times and its fine warriors, we want to know how it felt like to get hold of their war paraphernalia. For some, it’s a reminder of the very romantic scenes of medieval heroes. Don’t get too carried away though because you have to select the best classical equipment, this can contribute to your success as an archer.

Keep in mind that traditional equipment use completely different types of materials to create the bows and arrows. The materials that bowyers used before are not necessarily being utilized now to create traditional bows.

When buying traditional archery supplies such as bows, make sure that the wood is without cracks, has no gray coloring, doesn’t have any decay or damage and it should be flexible. Also, the wood is not supposed to have knots, branching limbs or turning in the wood. If possible choose dry wood instead of green wood because of the power it can provide. If you really want to purchase a bow made of green wood, pine is a good choice. It should be clean. Woods such as apple tree, ash, black locust, cedar, elm, hickory, hemlock, ironwood, lemonwood, maple, mulberry, oak, Osage orange, sassafras, teak and yew are all ideal bow material.

If you are new into buying traditional archery supplies and you are feeling lost, you can join into online forums that are dedicated to this sport. You can meet a lot of enthusiasts who would love to answer any questions you may have. If you don’t like talking to people online then why not join an archery club in your area? You can also read product reviews and expert opinions before you head to the store or order your supplies online. Read as much as you can if possible so you can separate the brands that are worth your money.

Limb Saver

Limb Saver
What is a good resale on these weapons?

I have a Remington 870 Express 20 gauge, and a Remington 700 .270 Winchester. Both are in fair condition. And the 700 comes with a Bushnell banner scope, a sling, and a limb saver recoil pad.

Last fall my local Gander Mountain store was selling new in the box Remington 870 Express shotguns for $200 plus tax. So, I personally would not pay more than $125 for a used one.

As for the Remington 700…it depends on if it is an ADL or BDL rifle. The Bushnell Banner scope is worth about $5…so that settles that. For a Rem 700 BDL in 270 Win, I could see myself paying $350 for one in really good shape.
